Session 9 · Ch 9 · Choose your table (the fork in the road)
Choose your table (the fork in the road)
What it means (summary)
Proverbs 9 sets two clear invitations: Wisdom’s open, prepared table that leads to life, and Folly’s secret snare that leads to death. Each day you stand at these forks — one path feeds and builds, the other flatters and destroys — and the choice is repeated with every gate and word.
Scripture (KJV) with Explanation
Note: Always read these verses in your own Bible and ask the Holy Spirit for understanding. The summaries and explanations here are a supplemental guide and are generated with the help of technology; please weigh them against Scripture itself and wise counsel.
Proverbs 9:1–2, 5–6
“Wisdom hath builded her house, she hath hewn out her seven pillars:
She hath killed her beasts; she hath mingled her wine; she hath also furnished her table. …
Come, eat of my bread, and drink of the wine which I have mingled.
Forsake the foolish, and live; and go in the way of understanding.”
Explanation: Wisdom’s invitation is public, prepared, and generous; accepting it means turning from foolish paths to walk in understanding and life.
Proverbs 9:13, 16–18
“A foolish woman is clamorous: she is simple, and knoweth nothing. …
Whoso is simple, let him turn in hither: and as for him that wanteth understanding, she saith to him,
Stolen waters are sweet, and bread eaten in secret is pleasant. But he knoweth not that the dead are there;
and that her guests are in the depths of hell.”
Explanation: Folly appeals through secrecy and stolen pleasure; its surface sweetness hides decay and death.
Proverbs 9:8–10
“Reprove not a scorner, lest he hate thee: rebuke a wise man, and he will love thee. …
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.”
Explanation: The wise receive correction and grow in love; reverence for the LORD is the foundation of true wisdom.
Bridge (Scripture → Practice)
Since both Wisdom and Folly invite you daily, today you will make the fork visible: choosing the open, prepared table and declining the secret one — and receive correction with gratitude.
Application (practice)
- Name today’s forks: list two likely moments when you will face a choice between honest work and shortcuts, or truth and flattery.
- Choose your table: take one prepared portion at a set time and decline one secret or shortcut option when it appears.
- Receive correction: if feedback comes today, pause, thank the person, and apply one point.
Action (SMART)
Before 6:00 p.m., (1) take one prepared portion at a set time, (2) decline one shortcut, and (3) thank someone for helpful correction.
Examples:
- Schedule a short, honest work block (or reading) at a specific time instead of delay-scrolling.
- Close a gossip thread or pirated resource and open your planned portion instead.
- “Thanks for that feedback — I’ll adjust X today.”
WIIFM
- Today: less scatter and regret; more settled peace.

Comparative Reinforcement
Confucius taught that integrity chooses the open and rightful way rather than hidden gain; public, honest action keeps the mind at peace.
Right Speech and Action emphasise that refusing gossip, flattery, and stolen benefit keeps both word and work clean; what you practise becomes what you desire.
Aristotle reminds us that repeated choices form habit and habit forms character; every time you choose Wisdom’s table, you train your heart to love what is truly good.
